Despite rumors and earlier approval, Matiang’i says he is still consulting with several political parties before deciding to use a campaign car.

Speaking in an interview on Citizen television on Tuesday, July 1, the former minister, who had never won or won the election seat, revealed that he was in talks with at least seven to nine political parties.

These include Jubilee Party By the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), all of which have already shown a willingness to support its mission.

“This afternoon, I meet another political party that asks if we can work together. I have been asked this by seven or eight political parties,” He revealed.

In early 2025, Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni announced that the party had agreed with Matiang’i as a presidential flag-shooting that sparked public debate and claimed that the former minister was a retired presidential project Uhuru Kenyatta.

However, Matiang’i dismissed the allegations, saying his previous service in the Liberty Cabinet does not make him a project of anyone.

“Uhuru appointed about 30 members of the cabinet. Some are still serving to this day. Am I a project simply because I was in his cabinet? If it is about the service, should I be called a World Bank project?” He asked.

Why does Matiang’i not associate with any party?

The politician emphasized that his neutral position is strategic, to allow space for integrated negotiations in the Kenyan political sphere.

Fred Matiang’i has explained why he has maintained neutrality before the 2027 presidential candidate.

“I am not a member of any political party. I think if I had made a choice now and cling to one political party, I would have deprived the others I am negotiating with,” he said. “The fact is that we chose democracy, and we have many political parties. In Kenya, we have more than 89 political parties, and that is what Kenyans want to organize their politics at the moment.”

While addressing the future issues, Matiang’i emphasized the importance of building a Union, saying that the current political situation does not only favor party administration.

“You will hear more engaging with me. I want to participate in a deep and integrated discussion before I can resolve a political entity,” He said.

Matiang’i, who also served as Minister of Education, has made himself as a person who brings unity before 2027, suggesting that his campaign will focus on building a broader partnership.

Will Gachagua support Fred Matiang’i?

On the other hand, the former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua He questioned the possibility of running for Matiang’i seat without sincere support from his Kisii stronghold, emphasizing that any sincere candidate must gain regional support for a trusted national candidate.

He revealed that he sent 20,000 activists from the ground up to Kisii to test the public’s feelings about the possibility of running for the Matiang’i presidency.

Gachagua said that his support for Matiang’i would depend on the outcome of the exercise.
