Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) interim deputy party leader Cleophas Malala has condemned the abduction of the party’s Youth League leader, Ms Wanjiku Thiga.

In a statement issued on July 1, 2025, Malala linked the abduction to individuals believed to be officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). He described the incident as illegal and a direct violation of Thiga’s rights.

“I strongly condemn the illegal abduction of Ms Wanjiku Thiga, the Youth Leader of the Democracy for Change Party (DCP), by officers believed to be from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI),” Malala said.

Malala said the abduction amounts to an attack on democratic freedoms and political expression, warning that such actions undermine the rule of law. He maintained that no citizen should be taken without following legal procedures.

”This blatant violation of her rights is not only unlawful but also a grave assault on democratic freedoms and political expression. In a country governed by the rule of law. No individual should be taken without due process or accountability,” he added.

He demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Thiga and urged human rights defenders, civil society organisations, and the public to speak out against the incident and stand in solidarity.

“I demand her immediate and unconditional release and call on all human rights defenders, civil society, and concerned citizens to stand in solidarity and speak out against this injustice,” he concluded.

Her abduction

The news was confirmed by Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina, who said that DCP Youth Leader Wanjiku Thiga was arrested by police officers and held at the Ruiru Police Station.

Speaking on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, through her X account, Maina stated that she was taken into custody around midday in the Kamakis area, sparking concern among political allies and on social media platforms.

Maina, a vocal supporter of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, voiced serious reservations about the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

She said the officers at Ruiru station appeared uncertain about the reasons behind the detention. “Wanjiku Thiga is being held at Ruiru police station; the officers within the station claim not to know what they’re holding her for,” Maina wrote, underlining what she described as a troubling lack of transparency and accountability.

Thiga, who serves as National Youth Leader and Member of the National Executive Committee of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), earlier tweeted to announce that she had been abducted at Kamakis.
