Nairobi Member of County Assembly (MCA) representing Kileleshwa ward, Robert Alai, has claimed that opposition leaders who are rushing to change the names of their political party or are forming new political outfits are doing so in fear of President William Ruto.

Taking to his official X account on the night of Monday, June 30, 2025, Alai argued that Ruto has forced Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to change his party’s name to Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) ahead of the 2027 elections.

Alai on Gachagua’s party

According to Alai, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also formed his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) out of fear of Ruto.

“Ruto forced Gachagua to form DCP. Now, Ruto has forced Kalonzo to change the name of Wiper. Everyone seems to be so scared of Ruto, the enigma. Interesting!” Alai stated.

Alai’s claims come hours after Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu, in a special Gazette Notice dated June 30, 2025, stated that WDM intends to change its name to Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF).

“IN EXERCISE of the power conferred by section 20(1)(a) of the Political Parties Act, the Registrar of Political Parties gives notice that Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) intends to change its party name to Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF),” the notice read in part.

Written submissions

Nderitu further invited members of the public who might have written submissions concerning the intended change to deposit them with the Registrar of Political Parties within seven days from the date of the publication of the notice.

Any person who would like to make further enquiries has been urged to make them through the registrar’s offices at Lion Place along Waiyaki Way.

“Any person with written submissions concerning the intended change by the political party shall, within seven (7) days from the date of this publication, deposit them with the Registrar of Political Parties. Further enquiries can be made through the Registrar’s Offices, P.O. Box 1131-00606, Lion Place, Waiyaki Way, 4th Floor, from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.,” Nderitu stated.
