‘Undergone a Rough Time’ – Nairobi United’s John Otieno Dedicates FKF Cup Win Over Gor Mahia to 2 Fallen Family Heroes

Nairobi United defender John Otieno has dedicated the FKF Cup win over Gor Mahia to two fallen heroes.

Nairobi United defender John Otieno has dedicated his inspired performance during their famous 2-1 win over Gor Mahia on Sunday to clinch the FKF Cup to his fallen mother and grandmother.

Otieno, who also won the trophy with Kakamega Homeboyz in 2023, has been getting his career back together after going through a huge challenge in his personal life, and being awarded the man of the match during their win over Gor Mahia was reward for it.

Goals by Frank Ouia and Enock Mashaka were enough to give them the victory, as they silenced Gor Mahia to make history by becoming the second ever NSL side since Mathare United to win the Cup and secure themselves a place in next season’s Confederation Cup.

“I thank God and dedicate this game to my fallen mother and grandmother,” said Otieno. “Heading into the final, I pledged to play for them because I have gone through a rough time and I am grateful to God.”

Otieno has had to rebuild not only his career but also his spirit after personal tragedy. His performance on Sunday was a culmination of months of perseverance and silent resolve.

“Being a champion for the second time is God’s grace. I thank Him. It has not been an easy ride, but I know things will be better down the road.”

With the win, Nairobi United not only sealed silverware but also punched their ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup, adding a new chapter to their fairytale season under head coach Nicholas Muyoti.

Otieno, who has tasted continental football before, knows the demands that lie ahead.

Kishane Thompson: Why Jamaican Sprinter is Unimpressed Despite Clocking Fastest Time Since 2015

Despite becoming the sixth-fastest man in the world, Kishane Thompson believes he has more to give.

“It’s a new challenge for us. We have to face it tactically. We’ve never represented the nation before, so we must prepare well. It’s not just about us—it’s about the country now.”

Reflecting on his individual accolade, Otieno was quick to share the spotlight.

“Being Man of the Match is about the team. Without the team, I’m not there. It’s my responsibility to make sure we win. Gor gave us a challenge, but we knew we would be champions.”

As the final whistle blew and the confetti fell, Otieno looked forward—not back.

“It’s not about the 1998 history, but the 2025 one. The kids growing up now will remember what we did today.”

With his eyes now set on leading Nairobi United into uncharted continental waters, Otieno is determined to push further and help his teammates rise to the challenge.

“There’s pressure. When I took part in the qualifiers before, we were eliminated at the preliminary level. We have to make another step now. I’ve gained experience, and I hope to pass it on to the rest of the squad.”
