Suna West Member of Parliament Peter Masara is mourning the death of his son, Hillary, in what has been described as a painful and personal loss for the legislator and his family.

The ODM Member of Parliament confirmed the passing of his son, Hillary, in a brief but emotional message shared on his official Facebook page on Monday, June 30, 2025.

Some wounds bleed silently, and some scars scream louder than open pain,” Masara wrote, breaking his silence on the tragedy that has left his family and constituents in mourning.

The message comes a day after news of the loss began circulating online, prompting an outpouring of condolences from members of the public and political colleagues.

Masara, now serving his second term in Parliament, is widely known for his calm, focused leadership in Migori County.

While his work in public service is visible, he has kept his personal life largely private.

ODM mourns

Though details surrounding Hillary’s death remain unclear, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Masara’s political party, later issued an official statement acknowledging the loss and offering their support.

We commiserate with Hon. Peter Masara, MP for Suna West, for the loss of his beloved son Hillary,” ODM said. “We pray for Mheshimiwa and his family to have God’s grace, strength and fortitude in this difficult time of grief.”

The bereavement adds to a sombre period for ODM, which has faced multiple losses in recent months.

On June 14, 2025, Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro lost his father. Earlier in the year, Parliament staffer Peter Ong’ondo was fatally shot near Parliament buildings, and former MP David Injendi died after a prolonged illness.

Masara has not released details regarding burial plans, but updates are expected from the family in the coming days as tributes continue to pour in.
