People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has launched a scathing attack against President William Ruto, accusing him of deliberately orchestrating violence and destruction across the country in a calculated attempt to declare a state of emergency and silence opposition forces.

Speaking in Narok, where she had joined other opposition leaders on Monday, June 30, 2025, Karua warned that the Head of State is laying a dangerous trap by sponsoring acts of chaos and then shifting the blame to his political rivals to justify suspending constitutional order.

“The way I see Kasongo proceeding, he wants to destroy the country so that he can declare a state of emergency,” Karua said.

She claimed that government property is being intentionally vandalised, only for the blame to be pinned on opposition supporters.

“He damages government property and then claims it is our followers behind the actions,” she added.

Karua further accused President Ruto of falsely attributing the recent wave of demonstrations to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in a move she termed as a strategic attempt to politically isolate him.

She insisted that Gachagua had nothing to do with the protests and that they were demonstrations fully driven by the people, warning Ruto against his dangerous habit of using scapegoats to deflect blame.

“They want to say it is Gachagua who led the protests. Let us not allow him to scapegoat Gachagua. Let us tell him right here, Ruto, do not mislead people by targeting Gachagua,” Karua said.

Opposition

Issuing a strong warning, Karua declared that if the president dares touch the opposition leadership, his administration will face a serious political backlash.

Karua reiterated that the future of the country lies in the hands of its citizens and urged them not to remain passive as their rights are eroded.

“If he touches the opposition leader, then there will be no term for him. Let it be known that Kenya is in the hands of its people, and if we do not rise to defend our freedom. Let us be clear. If we do not fight for our freedom and our Constitution, it will be taken over by hooligans,” she said.

She concluded by issuing an ultimatum to the president, demanding the immediate release of arrested youth whom she claimed were being detained without just cause.

She warned Ruto that he may face far-reaching consequences, including a mother of all protests reminiscent of the historic 1990 Sabasaba uprising, adding that he would be left with no term to complete and would instead be forced to bow out in disgrace.

“And the last thing I want to say is that we must give him an ultimatum. He must release the young people he has arrested, and if he fails to do so, he will see Sabasaba,” she said.

Karua also declared that protecting the lives and rights of young people, as well as safeguarding public property, should be a national priority.

“To protect our lives, Ruto must go. To defend the rights of the youth, Ruto must go. To protect our property so that they do not burn it and then claim it was us, Ruto must go,” she stated.
