The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns to midnight on July 1, 2025, offering a 24-hour grace period to accommodate taxpayers facing last-minute challenges.

In a notice issued Monday, June 30, 2025, on their X account, KRA confirmed the extension and announced longer operating hours to support the expected surge in filings.

Service centres and Huduma Centres will remain open until 8:00 pm on Monday, June 30, 2025, and operate throughout Tuesday, July 1, 2025, with a 24/7 contact centre available via 020 4 999 999.

Tumefungua service lane! 24-hour extension up to tomorrow midnight to file and pay your returns! We have extended our working hours tomorrow to serve you better,” read part of the post.

The extension follows reports of system slowdowns on the iTax portal and mounting pressure from taxpayers. A recent World Bank report noted that Kenya’s inflation rate stood at 5.6 per cent in June 2025, a factor believed to have affected many Kenyans’ ability to comply on time.

KRA’s move aligns with findings from the African Tax Administration Forum. The tax body emphasised that all taxpayers with a Personal Identification Number (PIN), whether earning income or not, are legally required to file returns.

To ease congestion at physical centres, KRA has also ramped up its digital outreach through the “Jiondolee Jam” campaign, which encourages taxpayers to use the iTax portal.

The slogan, playing on a local phrase for avoiding crowds, taps into Kenya’s 85 per cent mobile phone penetration rate as reported by the Communications Authority of Kenya.

Despite these efforts, some Kenyans have expressed frustration over technical challenges on the platform on repeated iTax error messages, calling on KRA to prioritise system stability alongside deadline extensions.

KRA has urged users to file early to avoid last-minute system overloads.

The authority said it will continue monitoring the situation and responding to queries in real time through its digital and customer care platforms as the filing window nears its close.
