Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has backed himself as the best-suited candidate to send President William Ruto home in the 2027 polls.

The former VP, while commenting on how the opposition will come to a consensus of one candidate, expressed optimism they will successfully cross that bridge when the time comes.

He emphasised that national unity will take precedence during the negotiations.

Reach Agreement

“I am confident we will cross that bridge when the time comes. I have made public my stance on this, and I’m confident we will reach an agreement guided by a very important consideration of our unity,” he stated in an interview with Kameme TV on Momday, June 30, 2025.

The ranking member of the People’s Loyal Opposition Coalition recounted shelving his presidential dreams in support of an alternative candidate. He, however, reiterated that his candidacy will be a winning ticket for the opposition.

“I believe it is the aspiration of many that my partners will see that too and decide that if I get the ticket, then Ruto will be a one-term president. I believe if we want Ruto home, I should get the ticket,” he added.

Kalonzo also dismissed assertions that he was not ready to back an alternative candidate if he fails to get the flag bearer’s ticket.

“We and Wiper party are now rebranded for this task. We are ready to take the youth’s agenda. We are trying to convince each other with Marth Gachagua and the team.  I won’t say I will not support another if I don’t get the ticket. We should not be creating scenarios. We will try our best, and it is why we are in talks to persuade one another,” he stated.

During the interview, Kalonzo also revisited the talks of his relationship with Orange Democratic Leader Raila Odinga, dismissing possibilities of another political pact with his former Azimio partner.

He expressed his regret that the veteran opposition figure abandoned the liberation struggle while counting the various dangers they braved against Ruto’s governance.

Having supported Raila in three election cycles, Kalonzo has rebuffed any possibilities of him following the former Azimio partners into Ruto’s government.

Supported Raila

“We were in Azimio with him and Martha, and I did my part in pushing them. My own supporters came out and helped Raila for a third time even though I was not on the ballot,” he stated.

In 2023, I remember a while back in Pipeline we had ten-bullet attempts against us, and we survived. It is why sometimes I feel very bad that you can take that kind of position, and then you suddenly disappear. How can you disappoint such a struggle and spirit?” Kalonzo said while recounting his past struggles with Raila.

“People now think I can be persuaded by Raila to join Ruto. They should forget. I am standing my ground with the people,” he stated.
