Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has stated that the government, led by President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, played a role in planning the violent scenes witnessed during the June 25 protests, including the looting and torching of police stations.

Speaking during an interview with Kameme TV on Monday, June 30, 2025, Kalonzo said the incidents were not spontaneous acts of protest, but part of a calculated plan by state operatives using public resources.

“Wenye kulaumiwa vilivyo ni Kenya Kwanza ikiongozwa na William Ruto, na yeye akisaidiwa na Governor wa Nairobi, because yeye alinukuliwa wazi wazi kwa vyombo vya habari akisema tukutaneni nyinyi wandamanaji. Sasa akisema wazi namna hiyo alafu tunaona watu wakijitokeza magari ya polisi ndiyo inawasindikiza hao magoons. It was very well calculated,” he said.

Translation: “Those who should be blamed are the Kenya Kwanza government led by William Ruto, assisted by the Nairobi Governor, because he was clearly heard in the media calling out protestors. After such statements, we see people showing up and police vehicles escorting the goons. It was clearly planned.”

Kalonzo further criticised Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen, claiming he ensured heavy police presence in some estates to stop residents from participating in the demos.

“Safari hii Murkomen alienda kwa mtaa akiakikisha watu wasitoke, kuna ulinzi wa kutosha. Hata maandamano ya Albert Ojwang, walipora. Lazima tukemee uharibifu wa mali. Hawa wanatumia mali ya serikali kupanga hata wavamie police station.”

Translation: “This time Murkomen went to neighbourhoods ensuring people couldn’t come out, there was tight security. Even during Albert Ojwang’s protest, they looted. We must condemn destruction of property. These people are using government resources to even plan attacks on police stations.”

Leaders echo staged narrative

Kalonzo’s claims mirror sentiments shared by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who stated that the attack on Dagoretti Police Post was staged to target youth and leaders from Mt. Kenya.

“Hiyo unaskia polisi ilichomwa, Kikuyu, ni uwongo… ati watu wameingia police station, wamechoma, wameenda, how?”

Translation: “That police station in Kikuyu was burnt? It’s a lie… people entered a police station, burnt it, and left? How?”

He claimed that a meeting was held at State House to direct senior police officers to frustrate specific leaders.

Meanwhile, COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli accused former Chief Justice David Maraga of misleading the youth. Atwoli claimed Maraga was spotted escorting his grandchildren to participate in destructive activities.

“Maraga alikuwa Chief Justice, yeye sio Gen Z. Anasindikiza wajukuu wake kwenda kuchoma mali ya watu.”

Translation: “Maraga was the Chief Justice, he’s not Gen Z. He was escorting his grandchildren to go destroy people’s property.”

Atwoli also blamed Gachagua for inciting the protests, claiming they were no longer peaceful but had turned into organised chaos driven by political agendas.
