Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy & Maritime Affairs Hassan Joho has revealed the details of his meeting with a section of youth from West Pokot County.
Taking to his official X account on Monday, June 20, 2025, Joho stated that he had hosted the members of the West Pokot Youth Association in his office.
The former Mombasa County Governor said that his discussions with the youth revolved around mining activities in West Pokot.
During the meeting, CS Joho highlighted several key measures the ministry has put in place to ensure the mining sector plays a central role in transforming not only West Pokot’s economy but also contributes meaningfully to the country’s broader economic development.
“I hosted members of the West Pokot Youth Association in my office to discuss mining activities in their county. During our meeting, I shared the measures the ministry has implemented to ensure the mining sector effectively contributes to the economic transformation of not only their County but across the country,” Joho stated.

Joho on artisanal miners
Among the initiatives shared was the ministry’s ongoing effort to organise artisanal miners into cooperatives. According to Joho, this move is aimed at helping small-scale miners maximise their earnings and access more structured support.
“Some of these initiatives include organising artisanal miners into cooperatives to maximise their benefits and establishing aggregation centres to ensure these miners receive fair value for their minerals, protecting them from unscrupulous dealers,” Joho wrote on X.
Large-scale investors
The CS emphasised the importance of attracting credible, large-scale investors who will create jobs, pay royalties, and invest in the development of essential infrastructure in mining regions.
Beyond infrastructure and investment, Joho made a passionate appeal to the youth to take an active role in enlightening their communities on the potential of mining to unlock local economic opportunities.
“Additionally, we are focused on attracting reputable large-scale investors who will create jobs, pay royalties, and develop support infrastructure. I wish to encourage the youth to actively engage in sensitising their communities about the potential of mining for economic growth. Also in attendance was Mining Principal Secretary @KimtaiHarr,” he stated.
