Kangema Member of Parliament Peter Kihungi, who is the area MP for the slain mask seller Boniface Kariuki Mwangi, has come out to say that, up to now, the family has not been invited by the police to record a statement regarding the shooting of Boniface Mwangi.

While addressing the media alongside the family at Kenyatta National Hospital on Monday, June 30, 2025, the MP stated that the family has still not been granted the opportunity to write a statement following the death of the young man.

The MP went on to say that this could be part of a broader plan to allow the officers—who were seen in broad daylight shooting the mask vendor—to walk free without being held accountable.

“The family to now have not written a police statement. There are instances when they just want to release those young men. I am happy that maybe when we complained, they were arrested and taken to court, but the family has not been allowed to write a statement,” he said

He added that although the implicated officers were taken to court following public uproar, the family has still not been allowed to record a statement, despite having visited the police station several times requesting to do so. This opportunity has continuously been denied.

The MP further stated that the government should take over the hospital bill, but more importantly, justice must be served.

He warned that, based on the way things are unfolding, the case may soon be swept under the rug and forgotten.

“The family has gone twice or thrice to the police station; they just want to write a statement about their child. Up to now, they have written; now you suspect what they want to do. The issue of the hospital bill – the government should take over – but the most critical part is that we want to see justice,” he added.

His death

This comes on the heels of Boniface Mwangi’s father confirming the death of the mask vendor at KNH while he was undergoing treatment.

The family, while also speaking to the media following the demise of Boniface, also pleaded for justice to be served.
