On Wednesday, June 25, Kenyans marched on the streets in various cities to commemorate one year of protest against the 2024 Finance Bill, which cost more than 60 lives.

In Kiambu, young protesters were part of those who marched in solidarity, but the protest turned out to be bad.

Shops were closed, and smoke spread in the air after protesters consumed the Kikuyu courts, Kikuyu sub-county offices, and several government-owned assets, including cars, tuk-tuk and tractors.

What was intended to be a peaceful manifestation of unity and the Memorial ended in destruction, resulting in action from the authorities.

The Criminal Investigation Department (DCI) took immediate action to investigate the violence.

In a statement published on Facebook, the agency announced that 25 suspects had been arrested and taken to court in connection with the violence.

“In response to the violence, detectives initiated an investigation to identify and arrest the perpetrators. As a result, 25 suspects have been arrested and taken to the Chief Justice Court in the Ruiru Court,” DCI It said.

Investigating officers were able to get a 14 -day detachment order to detain the suspects while continuing to gather information on the damage.

During their monitoring activities, the officers made great success by recovering some of the stolen assets.

“In addition, two metal windows, a metal door, and a water tank, all stolen from the county government offices during protests, were found in the forest in the Mai-II-HII and Kabete areas,” He added DCI.

The agency noted that the investigation is ongoing, and they continue to monitor further to identify others involved in the incident.

DCI also called on the public to maintain peace during protests and warned that illegal actions would not be tolerated.

“The National Police Force urges citizens to abstain and avoid engaging in bad behavior during protests, as such actions will be taken by all the power of the law,” Added the statement.

What did the Government say about the June 25 protest?

In the related story, the Minister of the Interior Kipchumba Murkomen He condemned the violence and the destruction witnessed during the protest.

In a visit to the Central Nairobi business district, Murkomen said many small businesses have suffered significant losses, with business and livelihoods being destroyed by what he called organized criminals.

According to Murkomen, the peaceful protests were kidnapped by gangs that were well coordinated, funded and aimed at frustrating the government.

Murkomen went on to reveal that the DCI had launched an investigation into the suspects to cause the chaos.
