Kaluma Dismisses Gen Z Protests as Mt. Kenya Rebellion Against Ruto

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has stirred controversy after claiming the Gen Z-led protests have morphed into a regional rebellion against President William Ruto, rather than a unified national movement.

In a bold statement released on Thursday, June 26, 2025, Kaluma argued that the protests, once seen as a generational uprising, now reflect what he called a Mt. Kenya-driven insurrection with political motives.

He went further to disassociate the Luo Nyanza region from the demonstrations, insisting it has no reason to participate in what he views as a targeted pushback against the current administration.

“Those who still thought Gen Z remains a generational or national movement in Kenya saw the truth yesterday and now know better,” Kaluma said. “It is currently the code name for Mt. Kenya insurrection against President Ruto for creating an equitable and inclusive government.”

According to MP Peter Kaluma, the Gen Z-led protests have deliberately masked their true agenda by projecting a false sense of national unity. He claimed the movement occasionally highlights individuals from various communities like the Luo, Giriama, or Maasai to appear inclusive, but he cautioned Kenyans not to fall for it.

“They will mention a Luo, Giriama, or Maasai to disguise it as national, but don’t be duped,” Kaluma warned.

The Homa Bay lawmaker went on to commend the Luo community for steering clear of what he described as a destructive and unnecessary campaign. He urged residents in his region to stay off the streets and instead channel their energy into development and rebuilding efforts, especially after enduring years of marginalization.

“You did well yesterday. Let them destroy their businesses and infrastructure – we have none due to past discrimination in resources,” he told his constituents.

Kaluma doubled down on his criticism of the ongoing protests, calling them not just bad for progress but also risk-filled. He recalled past sad events that hit his people, warning not to let that sad past happen again.

“We have buried enough people, some without the support of the Church,” he said.

Kaluma described President William Ruto’s leadership as a pivotal shift for historically marginalized communities like those in Luo Nyanza. He praised the current administration for taking steps to distribute national resources more equitably, , saying Nyanza region now has no cause to join more protests.

“Keep off the streets until we advise otherwise. Let us rebuild after years of subjugation, discrimination, and neglect,” Kaluma urged.
