A man living with disabilities has joined the Kenyan youths in protesting in honour of victims of the 2024 anti-government protests that led to the death of at least 60 people countrywide.

He took it to the streets of Nakuru Central Business District (CBD) on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, to commemorate the departed during the first anniversary of the disastrous occurrences in the country.

He joins thousands of people nationwide who are demonstrating, carrying Kenyan flags and placards while chanting anti-President William Ruto slogans.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga also made a surprise appearance at the protests, where he was received with heroic applause by the masses.

The former CJ, clad in his signature calm demeanour, climbed onto a raised pillar where he stood tall and greeted the eager protesters, who responded with cheers and raised fists, celebrating his presence as a symbol of justice standing with the people.

However, things quickly turned ugly on his end as he was caught up in a sudden tear gas situation after police lobbed canisters toward the crowds that had surrounded him in jubilation.

The moment of celebration dissolved into panic, with protesters scattering as plumes of white smoke filled the air.

The protests

According to Securex Agencies Limited, protesters have blocked the Namanga–Nairobi highway with stones. Police have deployed tear gas, and traffic disruptions have been reported.

In a statement released on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the agency reported that protesters had lit bonfires at the Capital roundabout in Kisii town, resulting in traffic disruptions in Kisii County.

Similarly, the police have deployed tear gas to disperse protesters who had blocked the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway and lit bonfires in Makueni County.

Furthermore, a small group of protesters is active at Chwele Market in Bungoma County, and another group of protesters is currently active in Embu town, specifically around the Cylet area.

Bonfires have been lit along the street, and anti-riot police are on-site monitoring the situation.

“Protesters have lit bonfires along Thika Road – Tatu City Junction in Ruiru Sub County. Along Waiyaki Way, police deployed teargas at protesters who had gathered at the footbridge at Kangemi,” added the statement.

Demonstrators have vowed to remain peaceful, even as police continue to monitor and, in some instances, confront the crowds.
