Governor Wanga hails Homa Bay residents for demonstrating peacefully

Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga has lauded the residents of Homa Bay County for maintaining peace and order during the Wednesday, June 25, 2025, protests in honour of Kenyans who lost their lives during the June 25, 2024, anti-Finance Bill protests.

In a statement issued on the night of Wednesday, June 25, via her official social media accounts, Governor Wanga expressed her appreciation for the calm and respectful manner in which the county observed the day, describing it as a reflection of the people’s deep commitment to unity and national progress.

“I take this opportunity to send special gratitude to you, the people of Homa Bay County, for the remarkable way in which you have maintained peace throughout the day. Your choice to remember our fallen heroes through peaceful engagement is highly commendable and showcases your commitment to a stable and united nation,” the statement read.

Homa Bay’s historic role

Wanga further emphasized Homa Bay’s historic role in national conversations around justice and human rights, urging residents to continue upholding their legacy as champions of democracy and peace.

“During defining moments of our nation’s quest for justice and human rights, we have always stood to be counted as a people. Let us continue to make Homa Bay a beacon of peace, hope, and progress. I thank you immensely!” she stated.

Nyong’o hails Kisumu residents

Wanga’s statement comes hours after her Kisumu counterpart Anyang’ Nyong’o, thanked residents of the lakeside city for their decision to give the commemoration of the 2024 Gen Z protest a wide berth.

In a statement on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, Nyong’o hailed the Kisumu city residents and their surrounding towns for exercising restraint even as protests kicked off in major cities and towns around the country.

“I wish to thank the residents of Kisumu County for maintaining peace today during the activities commemorating the first anniversary of the Gen-Z protests. The streets in Kisumu City and other towns in our sub-counties remained relatively calm throughout the day,” Nyong’o said.

“The people of Kisumu will always be vigilant to protect and promote human rights in our republic. We will also express constructive dissent to any form of political oppression and abuse of human rights.”
