Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has appealed to the youth ahead of the planned protests to commemorate the 2024 protesters who lost their lives or were maimed.

In a statement on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Sakaja acknowledged that while the right to demonstrate is anchored in the law, there was a need to remain peaceful and safeguard the livelihoods of city businesspeople.

“As we mark the first anniversary of the Gen Z protests, I would like to affirm the Nairobi City County government’s support for the constitutional peaceful assembly. The voices of our people are powerful and important in shaping the future of our city and nation,” Sakaja said.

Safeguard livelihoods

“We recognise the energy, the passion and the civic engagement demonstrated, and I stand with all of you in this right of lawful and peaceful expression.”

“I urge all participants to abide by the law and to safeguard lives, livelihoods and property during these demonstrations,” the governor stated.

Sakaja equally appealed to police officers who will be charged with providing security to the protesters to ensure professionalism in the execution of their mandate and to safeguard the dignity of demonstrators.

“At the same time, I call on the National Police Service to exercise professionalism in handling the protest, ensuring that the safety and the dignity of every Kenyan is protected all through the day,” Sakaja observed.

Emergency services

He equally revealed that the Nairobi City County government had made arrangements for emergencies of any kind that may arise during the protests.

“My administration has made arrangements to provide essential support as may be required. In case of any emergency in any part of the city, call our emergency operation centre on 1508, and our ambulances, doctors, nurses or fire engines will be available to assist you,” Sakaja noted.

The remarks come ahead of the planned demos, which will mark the first year when the Gen Z-led agitation against the 2024 Finance Bill culminated in the breaching of Parliament just moments after members of the National Assembly passed the controversial tax laws, which were later withdrawn by President William Ruto.
