Mwaura Declares June 25 a Normal Working Day, Warns Against Protests

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has downplayed nationwide protests planned for June 25, assuring the public that the day will proceed like any other.

Speaking on Monday, June 23, 2025 during an interview on Radio 47, Mwaura acknowledged that Kenyans have the right to reflect or commemorate the day privately. However, he made it clear that the government would not permit public demonstrations. He cautioned against any attempts to disrupt peace, warning that authorities will not tolerate unlawful gatherings.

His remarks come as momentum builds among Gen Z activists, who are calling for June 25 to be observed as a symbolic public holiday in remembrance of lives lost during last year’s anti-government protests.

“There will be no demonstrations on June 25. That day will be a normal working day,” Mwaura said. “If anyone wants to mark the day, they’re free to do so at home.”

Mwaura condemned what he called the criminal hijacking of past protests, accusing rogue elements of using demonstrations to commit violence and destruction.

He urged the police to remain neutral and fulfill their duty of protecting all citizens equally.

“It’s unacceptable for protesters to carry weapons, just as it’s wrong for them to provoke or taunt the police,” he said.

“If anyone chooses to protest, they must do so peacefully and strictly within the bounds of the law.”

Police have confirmed they are monitoring the situation and will maintain security nationwide.
