The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved the murder charges against six people linked to the murder of Albert Omondi Ojwang.

Ojwang, a teacher and blogger, was beaten to death at Nairobi Police Station a few hours after being arrested from Homa Bay County.
Ojwang’s death sparked outrage across the country, resulting in a wave of The procession across the country demanding police responsibility and ending police violence.
On June 10, 2025, the DPP, exercising authority under section 157 (4) of the Constitution of Kenya and section 5 (2) of the Office of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Chapter. 6B, instructed the independent authority to manage the police (IPOA) to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
Following the order, IPOA submitted its investigative file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on June 22, 2025, for review and legal guidance.
What suspects will face murder charges in Ojwang’s case?
After receiving the file, the DPP immediately formed a team of senior prosecutors to make a thorough review.
According to their findings, the DPP has now approved the murder charges against six suspects, including OCS police officers Samson Kiprotich Talaam, Police Constable James Mukhwana, and Peter Kimani.

The other suspects are John Ngige Gitau, Gin Ammitou Abwao, and Brian Mwaniki Njue. They were allegedly rented to torture Ojwang to death in cells.
Mukhwana admitted involvement in the murder but claimed he was acting under the instructions of Dig Eliud Lagat and OCS Talaam.
In his confession, he revealed that he canceled his conversation with Talaam after being warned to stop talking about the issue over the phone.
The suspects are expected to be brought before the Kibera High Court on June 23 to answer the murder charges in violation of section 204 of the Penal Code, Chapter. 63 of the laws of Kenya.
The ODPP reiterated its commitment to maintain the rule of law, to protect the public interest, and to ensure justice is given.

Meanwhile, the investigation revealed that Talaam was regularly contacting police officers on the day of Ojwang.
IPOA reports indicated that he was likely to be involved in planning, directing, coordinating, and trying to hide the killings.
Talaam was also accused of planning the disguise by allegedly directing a technician to delete CCTV images related to the killings.
He was also charged with providing false information that was later presented by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, and attracting public anger and anger.
A police statement claimed that Ojwang died after hitting the cell wall several times.
Kanja was forced to apologize to Kenyans after a dead body report confirmed that Ojwang was beaten to death in the cell, thus eliminating the possibility of injury.

Investigating officials from the Criminal Investigation Department (DCI) are investigating reports claiming a Talam phone was used to defraud citizens under IPOA protection.
Talam’s attorney, led by lawyers Danstan Omari And Cliff Ombeta, told the court that their client’s phone was used to ask for money from his family and friends to help him get out of his current situation.
IPOA, through State Attorney JV Owiti, denied the allegations, saying that the OCS phone was in custody and had never come out of the investigators.
