National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has paid tribute to the late Ambassador Boaz Mbaya, describing him as a distinguished public servant who served as a cornerstone of Kenya’s diplomatic service following his death on Sunday, June 22, 2025.
In a statement posted on his X account on June 23, 2025, Wetang’ula, who previously served as Foreign Affairs Minister, expressed deep shock and sadness, recalling his interactions with the ambassador.
“I received with deep shock and profound sadness the news of the passing of Amb. Boaz Mbaya, a highly respected and distinguished public servant who served our nation with unwavering dedication and integrity,” Wetang’ula wrote.
He further praised Mbaya’s intellectual rigour and principled approach to diplomacy.
“During my tenure at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I engaged with Amb. Mbaya on numerous matters of diplomacy and international cooperation. His clarity of thought, depth of insight, and principled approach left a lasting impression on all who had the honour of working with him,” Wetang’ula noted.
The Speaker further hailed Ambassador Mbaya’s literary works, particularly his seminal book, Kenya’s Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, describing it as an enduring resource for policymakers and scholars alike.
“His seminal work, Kenya’s Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, remains a cornerstone in understanding the evolution of our nation’s diplomatic posture and strategic interests. It continues to be an invaluable reference for practitioners, policymakers, and scholars alike,” Wetang’ula emphasised.
Seasoned diplomat
Ambassador Mbaya’s journey in the diplomatic field began in the early years of independent Kenya, a time when the young nation was actively forging its identity and establishing its presence on the world stage.
He quickly distinguished himself with his keen understanding of international law and relations, rising through the ranks in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
His early assignments allowed him to serve in various capacities, gathering vital experience in both multilateral diplomacy and bilateral relations.
Throughout his illustrious career, he held critical diplomatic postings in key capitals around the world, including Ethiopia, Tanzania, and France, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening economic ties and fostering cultural exchange.
In addition to his direct diplomatic postings, Mbaya also served as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, providing crucial administrative and strategic leadership. In this capacity, he oversaw the implementation of Kenya’s foreign policy objectives, ensuring coordination across various missions and departments.
