Mudavadi meets South Sudan mediators, reaffirms Kenya’s commitment to regional peace

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who doubles as the Foreign and Diaspora Affairs CS, on Monday, June 23, 2025, held a high-level meeting with the Chief Mediator of the Tumaini Initiative for South Sudan, Lt Gen (Rtd) Lazarus Sumbeiywo, in Nairobi. The visit, marked by open and constructive dialogue, underscored Kenya’s unwavering commitment to fostering peace and stability in the region.

Lt Gen. Sumbeiywo, a veteran peace envoy who previously played a pivotal role in brokering the 2005 Sudan Comprehensive Peace Agreement, was accompanied by Deputy Chief Mediator Ambassador Mohammed Guyo and Feliciter.

Taking to his official X account moments after their meeting, Mudavadi revealed that their discussions touched on the evolving political and security dynamics in South Sudan, where efforts to implement peace agreements and stabilise governance structures remain delicate yet crucial.

“Engaged in insightful and productive discussions with Lt Gen (Rtd) Lazarus Sumbeiywo, Chief Mediator of the High-Level Mediation for South Sudan (Tumaini Initiative), during his visit to my office. He was accompanied by Deputy Chief Mediator Amb. Mohammed Guyo and Ms Feliciter. Our conversation focused on the evolving political and security landscape in South Sudan and the ongoing efforts to foster lasting peace and stability,” Mudavadi stated.

Mudavadi on Kenya’s role

Mudavadi also emphasised Kenya’s steadfast role as a regional anchor for peace and a trusted partner in supporting South Sudan’s journey toward long-term stability.

“Kenya remains steadfast in supporting regional peace initiatives and working closely with the Republic of South Sudan and our regional partners to promote sustainable peace and shared prosperity across the Horn of Africa,” he wrote on X.

Tumain Peace Initiative

The Tumaini Peace Initiative, launched on May 9, 2024, seeks to revitalise dialogue among key South Sudanese stakeholders and bring fresh momentum to stalled peace processes. Kenya’s backing of this effort signals its continued leadership in advancing regional diplomacy and stability.
