The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) deputy leader, Cleophas Malala, has stated that he does not regret being ousted from the ruling party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Speaking at a local TV station on Monday, June 23, 2025, Malala stated that his removal from UDA was a blessing in disguise.
“I have never regretted that move (being kicked out of UDA), that was a blessing in disguise, and I want to say that my coming out of UDA was a blessing in disguise because I would have sunk with the entire ship,” he stated.
He stated that he was ousted when he tried to hold the party leader (President William Ruto) accountable for the promises the Kenya Kwanza government made to Kenyans during the 2022 general election campaigns.
“When we tried to raise pertinent, genuine issues, we were seen as moles. When we raised the issues of the philosophy of our party, it was to bring the people from the low level of the pyramid (bottom-up economic agenda); this was your guiding principle during the campaigns. You have forgotten to introduce government programmes that support that ideology. The party leader saw us as people who had lost hope in him and were not supporting his administration at the moment. That was when they decided to kick me out,” he added.
Malala removed from UDA
Malala was ousted as UDA Secretary General during a National Executive Council meeting presided over by the party’s National Chairperson, Cecil Mbarire, in August 2024.
“The appointment of Cleophas Malala as the interim Secretary General is hereby revoked. These changes are effective immediately,” the party said in a statement.

As a result, Hassan Omar, the party’s vice chairperson at the time, was named acting secretary general.
“Upon wide and consultative deliberations, and in compliance and in accordance with its mandate under Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution, the National Executive Committee has determined to designate the Vice-Chairperson, Hon. Hassan Omar Hassan, to act as the Secretary General on an interim basis.”
“We have noted the progressive continuation of our grassroots election in the first phase, and we have directed the National Elections Board to make necessary adjustments and continue with the elections in the rest of the counties as earlier communicated. These elections will ultimately offer the members of the party an opportunity to choose their leaders from the polling centre all the way to the national level,” added the statement.
