Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has warned against plans by Gen Z protesters to march to State House on June 25, saying the area is a protected zone and not open for public demonstrations.
Speaking amid rising momentum for nationwide protests against police brutality and extrajudicial killings, Cherargei acknowledged the constitutional right to peaceful demonstrations but cautioned against breaking the law or endangering lives.
“Article 37 of the Constitution allows for peaceful and unarmed demonstrations,” he posted on Monday, June 23, 2025, via his X account. “State house is a protected area that’s a no go zone for the demos as per the law,” he added.
The senator, a vocal supporter of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), further urged authorities to hold organisers of the protests accountable should any violence erupt.
“The planners and financiers of the upcoming Gen Z demos must be held accountable at an individual level in case of loss of lives, destruction of property, or disruption of peace in the country,” Cherargei said.

Crackdown on activist groups
He claimed that some activist groups and non-governmental organisations were using the protests to sow chaos and destabilise the country.
“The NGOs regulatory board must deregister activist organisations that are fanning instability in the country through violent demonstrations,” he added.
His remarks come just days before the planned protests. Many young people, still angered by recent police violence and the Finance Bill protests, have vowed to take to the streets again.
On the same day, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura also weighed in, stating that June 25 would remain a normal working day.
“There will be no demonstrations on June 25. That day will be business as usual,” Mwaura said.
He warned against criminal elements hijacking peaceful protests and assured Kenyans that security agencies would be on high alert.
