David Oyando, a Kenyan entertainer and comedian popularly known as Mulamwah, has come out to open up about what he went through after his phone number was shared online by a popular blogger.

In a video posted on his YouTube channel on June 21, 2025, Mulamwah revealed that this was one of the roughest moments of his celebrity life.

It happened around after he was involved in a public fallout with his ex-girlfriend Ruth K, with the two exchanging bitter words online and the whole country seemingly turning against him.

He said that after his phone number was exposed, his phone was overwhelmed with messages from all over. People sent money in various amounts, from as little as Ksh1 and Ksh10 to as much as Ksh5,000 and even Ksh10,000, just to confirm if the number indeed belonged to him.

In total, the amount sent reached up to Ksh30,000, all from Kenyans curious to verify his identity.

Besides the money, he also received a flood of insults from people who chose to side with his ex-girlfriend during their online spat.

Many used the leaked number to send him hateful messages, something he found troubling. He questioned why people would choose to insult someone based on rumours and propaganda circulating on social media.

Mpaka number yangu ikawekwa huko Twitter na (Francis) Gaitho mashilingi, macalls nilipata over thirty-one thousand jana from mabob bob, but ilichanganyika na ile story ingine, ilikuwa inaendelea; some people were checking on me wanakutumia hapo za soda, wanakuambia go drink some soda, and a fan of Mulamwa alinitumia Ksh5K, wengine 2k for my number being out there,” Mulamwa said.

Turning tables

Mulamwah further stated that as the situation escalated with endless calls and messages, some showing love and others full of hate, he decided to retaliate.

He redirected all the incoming calls to Gaitho’s phone number as a way of punishing him for leaking his private contact to the public and making him deal with the chaos he had caused.

Ilibidi nitafute number ya Gaitho mwenye alipost number yangu Twitter, nikadivert calls zote zangu ziende huko, kwa sababu calls ni mimgi nikadiveret ziende kwa number yake; at least naye apate salamu huko pia,” he added.

He added that conmen also took advantage of the situation. Some began using his number in supermarkets to request payments and impersonate him.

Mulamwah emphasised that sensitive information, especially that involving public figures, such as phone numbers, should never be shared publicly without consent.
