Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has criticised the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader  Rigathi Gachagua, urging leaders to shift from slogan-driven politics to offering tangible solutions for Kenyans.

In a statement on  X on Saturday, June 21, 2025, Kindiki stated that Kenyans are growing increasingly impatient with political rhetoric that lacks substance.

While not naming Gachagua directly at first, Kindiki appeared to respond to recent public appearances by the DP that were dominated by chants and slogans.

“Those whose only message is the chants about who will be in office for how long or who speaks with what kind of voice will be swept away by the torrential downpour of an increasingly smarter, enlightened and no-nonsense public who can no longer buy delusion from political dimwits, fakes, cons and counterfeits,” read the statement.

Haya madharau na kiburi vitaisha (These disrespect and pride will end); it is only a matter of time,” he added.

This comes a few weeks after Kindiki encountered a hostile crowd in Othaya, Nyeri County, that chanted “one term” slogans across the fence where he was holding an empowerment event.

The youth, who were outside the stadium’s perimeter fence on June 4, 2025, were repulsed by security officers as the event went on.

More police officers were deployed to take control, even as DP Kindiki, in a verbal attack seemingly directed at his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua, accused him of misleading the region.

“Haya mambo ya viongozi kuja kutisha viongozi wengine, yakome! Lazima tuheshimiane… heshima si utumwa..Huwezi kuja hapa nikama wewe tu ndio kiongozi unajua kila kitu… ati wewe ndio unafaa kusikizwa… kwani wewe ni Mungu?”

Loosely interpreted as:

“This issue of leaders threatening other leaders must stop. We must respect each other. You can not pose as a leader who knows it all to get praised. Are you God?” he posed.

DCP Party

Gachagua officially launched his party, DCP, on May 15, 2025, in Lavington, Nairobi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during the launch, Gachagua emphasised that the party will provide strong opposition to the present Kenya Kwanza government, maintaining that it would “shake the political landscape”.

Gachagua said he has been at his home for the last six months, holding consultations geared towards molding his political party.

He noted that his party has been established in the background of the need to provide improved leadership to Kenyans and raise them above the historic challenges of poor governance.

The creation of the DCP follows Rigathi Gachagua’s October 2024 impeachment, which he said left the Mt Kenya region without a political vehicle.

He likened the experience to driving to a wedding in a hired car that was dropped off at the river, citing the importance of the people having their own political platform.
