Homa Bay Town MP George Peter Kaluma has accused a section of Mt Kenya leaders and commentators of hypocrisy, following the recent police shooting of a face mask vendor, Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, during anti-finance bill protests.
“I have not seen Uhuru Kenyatta, Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua, Jeremiah Kioni or any Kikuyu vernacular stations calling for the resignation of Kikuyu leaders in government after Boniface was shot. Ironically, these same characters were asking Luos & ODM to quit the government because Albert Ojwang’ was killed by the police,” Kaluma posed in a scathing statement on X, on Friday, June 20, 2025.
The criticism comes amid a tense political climate in Kenya continue. Police response to protests has also been widely condemned for excessive force.
Kaluma stated claimed the same leaders had previously exaggerated circumstances around Ojwang’s death, only for it later to emerge that it was Kariuki, a Kikuyu from Nairobi, who had been shot, not Collins Omondi from Suba as initially reported.
The killing of Albert Ojwang’ triggered widespread outrage, especially in Nyanza and among opposition-leaning leaders. ODM-affiliated politicians called for investigations and resignations, demanding accountability from security agencies. Kariuki’s case has also received a national attention.
Political silence
Kaluma says this silence, particularly from leaders and influencers within the Mt Kenya region, reflects an uncomfortable truth about Kenya’s political landscape.
“No demonstrations have happened in Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a or Nyandarua. No one is chanting ‘Ruto must go’ because Boniface was shot,” he wrote. “None of the six million Kikuyus is asking for justice.”
“We thank God Bonface is alive and pray he recovers. Hypocrisy, pretense, double standards and treachery by this community are more dangerous than any dictatorship in power!”
Boniface is currently recuperating at KNH.
