The incident took place on Wednesday evening, June 18, in the Cravers area, West Thika, Kiambu County.

The officer has been identified by the name of Bernard Koome, who had been tasked with the special unit of Police Intercept and Verification (Spiv).

Koome was on duty along with three other officers inspecting the motorcycle to make sure they comply with the unique registration code required for all bodaboda operators in Thika.

How was a police officer shot in Thika?

According to witnesses, the officers suspended the motorcyclist who did not have that specific registration number.

When Mkonstabli pulled out motorcycle keys to prevent the driver from escaping, an intense debate broke out.

The motorcyclist, who is believed to have been worried about the possible effects, suddenly pulled out a pistol and shot him around his neck. The shot came from the back, causing serious injuries.

While other officers were hiding for their safety, the suspect escaped the scene before taking action.

He later appeared near the Royale hotel, where he blocked another passenger bodaboda.

In a video that TUKO.co.ke looked at it, the suspect directed the rifle to the driver and his client and ordered them to get down before leaving the motorcycle.

“I met a man with a gun while sending him a customer. He ordered us to get down and then left by a motorcycle. Said the bodaboda who was robbed.

A female witness present at the scene said:

“The officer just wanted to confirm if the motorcycle had a registration number. But when the relative saw the motorcycle had no number, he started to argue. Suddenly, he grabbed the officer’s rifle and shot him in the chest, a bullet appeared back.”

Koome was rushed to Thika Nursing Home but was announced to die when he arrived. Investigating officers found Ceska pistol magazine filled with ammunition along with two shooting pods at the scene. DCIO of Thika, Jacinta Mbaika, visited the area accompanied by senior police officers from Thika and Kiandutu stations.

A massive search has been conducted to find a suspect, with police calling for help from the public to achieve his arrest.
