Kirinyaga: The body of Joy Wanjiru, a 15 -year -old girl who drowned in a Gatitika waterfall in the Nyamindi River, has been found after a four -day search effort by residents, family members and local leaders.

The girl fell on a waterfall on Sunday, June 15, on a tour with a male friend.

Following the incident, angry residents marched on the road accusing the county and national government of not assisting in search and rescue operations.

Who was with Joy Wanjiru?

According to his father, Danson Njue, a young man accompanied by his daughter reported the incident to the Kimbimbi police station.

Since sad news emerged, residents from neighboring villages joined a search along the Nyamindi River.

Many camped along the river day and night, refusing to despair.

However, sadness began to increase as the days went by without success.

On the third night of the search, the tension intensified. Angry residents closed the Mwea -Embu highway, calling on the government to intervene immediately.

They blamed the authorities for ignoring the community in times of crisis and failing to provide vital disaster relief support.

“The government has not done anything. We were left alone in search of it. That’s why we closed the highway for a hearing,” said Simon Waweru, one of the boarders at the Kimbimbi business center.

The procession This turned out to be concerned, with residents temporarily arguing with police officers.

It took Nyangati chief Emaculate Wanjiru to intervene to calm the situation. Wanjiru had assured residents that more organized efforts would be made and called on them to allow the search to continue.

A few hours after the protest, the girl’s body was seen floating in the river, and was found by locals in coordination by local police officers.

“The body was obtained after water levels declined following the government intervening last night,” the host said.

“I still don’t believe. Her mother is sad, she continues to cry. Joy was a beautiful and a great girl in the future,” added another host, Marata Muthoni.

The Gatitika waterfall is a popular place, especially among young people from Kirinyaga and Nairobi, who visit swimming and interested in the beauty of its origin.

According to the village’s elder, Benson Gachoki, more than 100 young people visit the falls every week.

“Kirinyaga County is known for mysterious waterfalls. People are from far and wide. However, we now urge the government to ensure our safety. This should not happen again,” Gachoki said.

A man sinks while swimming in Ngumbatha’s waterfall
