Kikuyu gospel singer Betty Bayo has responded after a throwback photo of Mugithi star Samidoh appearing to propose to her went viral, causing a stir across social media platforms.
The image, which has been widely shared and dissected by online users, shows Samidoh down on one knee in front of Betty, holding an unidentified object in his hand.
The posture and setting mimic the familiar scene of a romantic proposal, and at a glance, the moment appears to capture a significant milestone between the two artistes.
In the background, a group of people can be seen observing and laughing, while Samidoh himself dons a cheerful face, appearing to fully embrace the humour of the moment.
The casual environment and light-hearted expressions suggest a staged scene, though many fans were quick to interpret it as a genuine past relationship moment.
However, in a Facebook post on Thursday, June 19, 2025, the ‘Highway’ hitmaker clarified the true context of the photo, stating categorically that the incident was nothing more than a prank captured during a playful interaction back in 2018.
“I am seeing this photo trending. Kwani hamjui jokes? This was in 2018, and it was a prank,” Betty wrote.

Netizens reactions
Following the clarification, netizens erupted with mixed reactions, with some insisting that Betty looked too happy in the photo, fuelling speculation that it may have been a genuine proposal after all.
Others, however, cautioned her that online users rarely grasp the context of pranks and often run with whichever interpretation suits their narrative. A separate section of commenters questioned whether Samidoh had returned to Kenya, further fuelling the curiosity sparked by the resurfaced image.
Here are some of those comments:
Jecinta Thaithi said, “Ati, it was a prank 🤣🤣.”
@Martin Martin Wasafi said, Life is so private… I think. 🚬🥵🥵😂🥵😂
@Gift Skeeter said, “What led to a prank of that nature? Anyway, life is so private.”
@Jane Nancy said, “The internet doesn’t know the prank. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣”
@Mutugi kaka said, “I wonder where Samidoh is seeing this from and whether he has returned to Kenya yet.”
@Bree tweri said, “People here online do not understand jokes and pranks, so be keen.”
Giving up on love
The clarification by the ‘Jemedari’ crooner comes just years after she disclosed that she had given up on love and family by the time she met her husband.
Bayo and her husband, Hiram Gitau, alias Tash, got married in a colourful wedding in December 2021 after dating for two years.

In a sweet birthday message to his husband in August of 2022, the singer noted how Tash walked into her life and changed her perspective on love.
Bayo noted that after kicking off their relationship, she realised just how he was the right person for her.
“Someday someone will walk into your life and make you realise why it didn’t work out with anyone else,” the singer wrote.
Adding; “One day, by God’s grace, we will tell our story not to brag or to hurt anyone but to encourage those that have given up on love and family. I was once an ambassador for the giving up on love company.”
Past marriage
Bayo, who was previously married to controversial preacher Victor Kanyari, advised her female followers on what to do and what not to do when married.

Taking to Instagram, she advised that a woman should not leave her marriage unless her husband says so by himself.
She also warned women against leaving their husbands because they are broke or if they cannot perform well in bed.
“Attention! To all women. Don’t leave your man because he got broke. Don’t leave your man because you got richer than him. Don’t leave your man because he can’t perform his duties in bed,” Bayo said.
