Moi University suffered a major blow after a bus carrying fourth -year students was involved in a fatal road accident.
- The accident, which occurred in Kapiyo area in Kisumu County, involved three vehicles: University bus, Toyota Fortuner of Siaya County government, and Toyota Noah
- At least fifteen students were seriously injured and rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s training and referral hospital, while thirteen others suffered minor injuries
- Tata preacher and television evangelist Gilbert Deya was driving Toyota Noah and lost his life in the crash
What was expected to be a regular academic journey turned into a disaster for Moi University students after a fatal road accident to interrupt and leave several injured.

The incident took place in Kapiyo, Kisumu -Bondo Road, Tuesday, June 17.
The bus was carrying fourth -year students from the School of Arts and Social Sciences on a professional tour in Nyanza Region.
According to reports, the accident involved three vehicles: University bus, Toyota Fortuner of the Siaya County government, and Toyota Noah.
In an internal memo that TUKO.co.ke gave an eye on, Moi Student Association (Mususo) Secretary, Edwin Kiplagat, confirmed that the college management had already set plans to serve and assist the affected students.
“With great sadness, we inform the Moi University community about a road accident involving our fourth year students who were on a professional tour in Nyanza region. We urge students to calm down as the situation is under control. Said Kiplagat.
Gilbert Deya dies in an accident
Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander, Peter Maina, made more details, saying the accident began when Toyota Noah, run by complex preacher Gilbert Deya, lost direction and hit the university bus.
The driver of the bus, trying to avoid collision face -to -face with the coming cars, avoided the bus overturned and slept on the side.
Sadly, Deya, a famous preacher for the “Miracle makeup”, died instantly.
Maina confirmed that Deya was accompanied by two women, one of whom was his wife. His body was taken to the Kimbawa Hospital Mochari.
Fifteen students were seriously injured and received emergency treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital, Kisumu.
Another group of thirteen students suffered minor injuries and were treated at Subwawa Sub-County Hospital. To Luck Good, all those in the Siaya County government car were not hurt.

MOI University bus accidentally accidentally
This tragic incident occurs just a few months after another accident involving another Moi University bus.
In March 2024, a separate group of students traveling to Mombasa for a professional visit were involved in an accident near Kimende, Nakuru -Nairobi Road.
The accident happened after a bus driver tried to pass another car but lost focus and into the car. Students were seen jumping from the bus in fear as residents of the area rushed to rescue them.
Life University bus accident
In July 2024, the University of Life bus had an accident in a Coptic circuit, a Kisumu-Kakamega road. One student died instantly while 46 others were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital for emergency treatment.
The accident happened on Tuesday, July 16, at 12:00 pm. Residents arrived quickly and helped students who were trapped under the remains of the bus.
The bus was badly damaged, and many students were injured at different levels.
GOVERNMENT GIVES A SCHOOL BUSINESS
As a result of a series of accidents involving student buses, the government has been urging drivers to comply with traffic rules and be more careful when transporting students.
One of the steps taken was to ban school buses traveling at night. Drivers are expected to stop the journey by 12 pm and continue at 12 am.
Also, the school buses should be closed with special security equipment such as the ‘Stop Signal Arm’ and two red lamps, according to the new orders by the National Transportation Authority (NTSA).
