Investigative reports revealed that his killers were following him from parliament. Despite having a guard, Ong’ongo was shot several times, bullets destroying vital organs including the lungs.

His death shocked the nation, especially considering that he had already expressed fears about his safety.

Who are the suspects of the murder of the Were?

After his death, several suspects were arrested, including his political opponent Philip Aroko, who was released on a strong bail – banned from contacting the deceased’s family, visiting Homa Bay County, and reporting to the police regularly.

On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, three additional suspects – Aabel Ochieng ‘, Edwin Odhiambo, and William Emoli Shigali – were brought before Judge Diana Kavedza in the Kibera High Court.

They all denied the murder charges and were denied bail for the seriousness of the offense.

Judge Kavedza emphasized that the release of them can now endanger the integrity of the case.

“This court has the authority to order the defendants not to contact or interact with the witnesses. If that happens, the bail will be revoked,” Said their attorney, John Swaka.

Cause of Shigali deprived of permission to attend his mother’s funeral

In a separate request, Shigali asked for permission to attend his mother’s funeral, but the request was rejected.

Judge Kavedza said allowing that could be a bad example.

“The request to attend the funeral has been rejected because I cannot guarantee his safety or determine if he is in danger of escaping. How will he get from prison to western Kenya?” He questioned.

However, Advocate Swaka complained about the decision saying, “The funeral cannot be repeated. To deprive her of the opportunity to say goodbye to her mother, but she is not found guilty, it is not fair and it is unconstitutional.”

Shigal’s brother also expressed his sadness, saying:

“His mother died in agony. But since the court prevented him from attending, we leave it all in the hands of God, for he alone has authority.”

Prosecutor Evelyn Onunga called on the court to continue to arrest the suspects, citing the seriousness of the allegations.

The charges revealed that Shigali and Ochieng ‘were closely contacted by another suspect of the Ong’ongo Were, who is expected to be charged with murder in the Mountains High Court.

The case will be reconsidered on July 17, 2025, for further instructions. Until then, the suspects will continue to be held.
