Friday Mask is a national silent campaign proposed by comedian and activist Eric Omondi, as a way to commemorate the victims of police brutality and demand accountability from the government.

He suggested on Friday, June 20, be called a “mask Friday”, and urged Kenyans across the country to wear a gaze as a symbol of solidarity and peace opposition.

“Yesterday, our brother was shot closely in the middle of the afternoon by a police officer. He was a vendor, he was not armed. He was just struggling to make a living,” Eric wrote.

He encouraged Kenyans, wherever they are or whatever they do, to wear a barrier to show solidarity against police violence.

He focused on the unity of the people, saying that the number of Kenyans is higher than that of police officers:

“We are 56 million Kenyans, and the police officers do not exceed 30,000. We must get to the point where it is enough.”

Eric also called on the public to introduce him to their photos wearing selfies, promising to publish them again as part of the movement.

In addition, he issued a stern warning to the police:

“For Kenyan police, the vendor will be the last one to be brutally murdered in the afternoon.”

In emphasizing his message, Eric shared a video showing the market mothers, boda boda and other ordinary citizens wearing pads, all quietly opposed to police brutality.
