Ojwang’s death has stirred The procession across the country, with Kenyan youths and human rights groups calling for justice to be done and responsible for the increased cases of arbitrary killings carried out by police officers.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat has voluntarily resigned from his post to allow an impartial investigation into the death of blogger Albert Ojwang in the main police station.

In a statement to the media released on Monday, June 16, Lagat said that his decision was guided by the need to maintain integrity and transparency while the investigation was underway.

“Considering my responsibilities as deputy chief of police service in Kenya, and in view of the current state of investigation into the tragic incident of Albert Ojwang’s death, I decided to temporarily withdraw from my position until the investigation was completed,” Said Lagat.

In addition, he described his readiness to fully cooperate in the investigation and to give his condolences to the Ojwang family.

“I give Albert Ojwang’s family sincerely for the great tragedy they have suffered,” he added.

Ojwang’s death has sparked great anger nationally, especially among Kenyan youths who have marched several times demanding justice.

Ojwang was arrested after allegedly posting a message on X (formerly Twitter) accusing Lagat of corruption and abuse of authority.

His death has fueled new allegations of arbitrary killings and abuse of authority and security forces.

The incident has sparked strong criticism from public and leaders of various political parties, many expressing concerns about police practices and the government’s commitment to protecting human rights.

The office of the Inspector General will now be temporarily administered by Lagat’s deputy until the investigation is completed.
