Mumias East constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has vowed to help raise funds to secure the release of police officer James Mukhwana, should he be found to be innocent in the murder of Albert Ojwang.
Taking to his official X account on the night of Saturday, June 14, 2025, Salasya stated that he had received reports that Mukhwana’s family in Malava, Kakamega County, was planning to sell a piece of land to raise Ksh500,000 that will be used to pay cash bail if granted by the court.
Salasya stated that he would not sit and watch Mukhwana’s family lose its land, only if their son is found by the court to be innocent.

The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) lawmaker argued that he will raise the required cash bail by mobilising his friends.
“I’m also being told the poor family of Mukhwana in Malava is struggling to sell the land for their son, who has found himself in a mix to get 500k for his cash bail. If I find out that Mukhwana is innocent in this matter, I will not let that humble family sell their land for cash bail. I will instead mobilise friends,” Salasya stated.
Officers on the run
The lawmaker also claimed that he had received information that officers who were present on the fateful day Ojwang was presented at Central Police Station are on the run and that no one is bothering to look for them so that they could record their statements.
He has also demanded the arrest of the three police officers who were captured by CCTV cameras at Mbagathi Hospital, where Ojwang was pronounced dead.
“I am being told that Deputy OCS and those who were present on the fateful day when Albert was being presented at Nairobi Central Police Station are on the run, and no one is bothering to look for them to make statements on their own. We must know why the three spotted police officers who brought Albert to Mbagathi are still free when they should be the first culprits in making statements as first culprits,” Salasya stated.

Salasya defends Mukhwana
Salasya had earlier vouched for the reputation of Mukhwana, the Central Police Station constable facing murder charges for the death of Ojwang.
In a statement shared via his X page on Friday, June 13, 2025, the MP recounted a past encounter with Mukhwana while he was a guest of the state at the police station.
Salasya, who referred to the cop as a good officer, praised him for his professionalism and regard for humanity.
“PC Mukhwana, my brother from Malava, you took good care of me during my three-day stay at Nairobi Central Police Station. You even introduced me to your colleagues, PC Kimani and PC Kiprotich, who, like you, demonstrated professionalism and humanity in your duty.
“I observed your conduct, and I say without fear, you are a good officer,” part of the statement from the MP read.

The constable was arraigned in court on Friday, June 13, 2025, to face murder charges for the death of the slain social media influencer that occurred on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
