A Kenya Air Force training aircraft crashed on Saturday, June 14, 2025, in Kwale County, with two pilots aboard who are now feared dead.

The incident, confirmed by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), occurred in the general area of Mwakijembe Primary School, Ndavaya, in Kinango, a rural part of Kwale.

The KDF issued a statement on X, acknowledging the accident.

“Earlier today, 14th June 2025, a Kenya Airforce Grob 120A aircraft experienced an emergency while on a training flight in the general area of Mwakijembe Primary School, Ndavaya, Kwale County,” the military stated.

“On Board were two pilots. Recovery is ongoing.”

The Grob 120A is a tandem two-seater primary trainer aircraft, commonly used for initial pilot instruction by various air forces worldwide.

While the KDF’s statement focused on the ongoing recovery efforts, local officials and sources close to the operation indicated grave concerns for the lives of the two officers, suggesting they are presumed to have perished in the crash.

The full extent of the wreckage and the precise cause of the emergency remain under investigation.

Air India crash

This tragic local incident comes at a moment of profound global sorrow for aviation safety, following closely on the heels of a devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, India, just two days prior.

That catastrophic event, which occurred on Thursday, June 12, resulted in the deaths of 270 people, including 241 of the 242 passengers and crew on board, as well as at least 29 individuals on the ground when the London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner struck a medical college hostel shortly after takeoff.

The Air India flight, number 171, had departed from Ahmedabad airport and was said to have issued a mayday call before crashing within minutes of liftoff.

Investigators have since recovered the aircraft’s black boxes, the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, which are expected to provide crucial insights into the cause of that disaster.

The sole survivor of the Air India crash, a British national, was treated for injuries and has since shared a harrowing account of his escape.

While the Kwale crash involves a military training aircraft and is significantly smaller in scale than the commercial Air India disaster, both incidents underscore the inherent risks in aviation.

The parallel timing has inevitably drawn attention to global aviation safety concerns, even as the specific circumstances of each event are distinct and subject to separate, ongoing investigations.

Recovery teams were quickly dispatched to the Ndavaya area in Kwale following the KDF military crash.

Authorities are expected to launch a thorough inquiry into the precise sequence of events that led to the incident, as the nation awaits further updates on the fate of the two pilots and the findings of the investigation.
