Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has launched a scathing attack on Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of politicising the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang while ignoring past atrocities committed under his watch.

In a strongly worded statement posted on Saturday, June 14, 2025, through his X account, Kaluma condemned Gachagua’s recent remarks about Ojwang’s death, accusing the former DP of hypocrisy.

Kaluma said Gachagua was part of the government in 2023 when young Kenyans were killed during anti-government protests, yet failed to act or condemn the violence.

Questions motive

The legislator questioned Gachagua’s timing, pointing out that his comments came on the same day John Mbadi made history as the first Luo-Nyanza native to present Kenya’s national budget as Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Economic Planning.

Kaluma accused Gachagua of using Ojwang’s death to score political points, warning him against dragging the Luo community into what he termed as dirty politics.

“Don’t take our silence for inaction. We are not the fools you think we are,” Kaluma wrote. “Those who murdered Albert will not escape justice, by our efforts, not yours.”

Kaluma further urged Gachagua to focus on his own community’s issues instead of capitalising on the pain of others.

He implied that genuine justice for Ojwang would come through institutional channels such as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), which has made visible progress in the ongoing investigation.

“Keep your dirty politics away from the killing of Albert,” he added. “Better still, you can kill and play politics with your own!”

Justice process underway

Kaluma’s remarks follow days of national outrage over Ojwang’s death while in police custody. IPOA has since arrested a police officer linked to the incident and promised that more suspects will face the law.
