President William Ruto has promised that police officers who mistreat Kenyans will be held responsible. He said the government will protect citizens from officers who break the law while doing their job.

Speaking on Friday, June 13, 2025, in Ngong, Kajiado County, during the destruction of illegal guns, Ruto said it’s important for security officers to follow the law.

“We will protect citizens from rogue police officers and make sure they are held to account,” he said. “Everyone must follow the law.”

The event also marked 20 years of the Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA), which brings together countries from the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa to fight the spread of illegal weapons. The group has 15 member countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda.

Murkomen vows justice

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who was also at the event, said tough action would be taken against police officers who misuse their power. He added that most officers do their job well and should not be judged by the actions of a few.

“We have over 120,000 officers, and just because a few have done wrong doesn’t mean all of them are bad,” Murkomen said.

He also spoke about the death of teacher Albert Ojwang while in police custody. He promised justice for Ojwang and said those responsible will be punished.

More than 6,000 illegal firearms seized between 2022 and 2025 were destroyed at the event. Ruto said most were handed in by the public through amnesty programmes, while others were recovered during security operations.

The President said this effort shows the country’s commitment to peace and safety and supports the African Union’s goal of “Silencing the Guns in Africa by 2030.”

He thanked both the security officers and members of the public, including religious and community leaders, for their support in making Kenya safer.
