The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) has vowed to pursue justice for the tragic death of one-year-old Amanda, who lost her life in a horrific incident at Jacaranda Residences, house C4-205. The infant was thrown from a balcony by her intoxicated uncle, an act that has left the community in shock and mourning.

In a statement released on Friday, June 13, 2025, FIDA-Kenya expressed profound grief over the loss of the child, describing the incident as a betrayal of trust.

“FIDA-Kenya is deeply saddened by the tragic and untimely death of baby Amanda,” the organisation stated. “Unfortunately, baby Amanda met her death at the hands of an uncle who should have ordinarily been her protector.”

The statement underscored the organisation’s commitment to ensuring accountability, with FIDA deploying an advocate to work closely with authorities to secure timely justice for Amanda’s family.

Baby Amanda’s tragic loss

The incident has left Jacaranda Gardens estate in Roysambu, Nairobi County, reeling with grief. On the night of Wednesday, 11 June 2025, the uncle, James M., came home drunk and caused a disturbance. Amanda’s parents were not at home, leaving the baby with the house help. According to Jacaranda Gardens management, the uncle created chaos.

“He overpowered the house help and took baby Amanda from her. The house help, sensing danger, ran out screaming for help,” said Lilian Gichuru, the property manager. “Tragically, the uncle threw Amanda from the balcony.”

Neighbours and security guards rushed to the scene after hearing the screams but were met with a devastating sight. They restrained the uncle and called Kiamumbi Police Station. Amanda was taken to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital, but sadly, she passed away during treatment.

Police, led by the Kiamumbi Police Station OCS, arrested the uncle, who was injured by angry residents and taken to Kiambu Hospital for treatment. The house help has given a statement to the police, and the case has been moved to Kahawa West Police Station. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is now involved.
