Police in Kakamega have made a notable breakthrough in the fight against crime after arresting two suspects and recovering a stolen motorcycle in a well-coordinated early morning operation.

The operation, conducted jointly by officers from Kakamega and Mudete Police Stations, unfolded at around 3:00 am on Friday, June 13, 2025, in the Mudete area.

The officers acted on a tip-off regarding a red Boxer motorcycle with registration number KMFQ 735P that had been reported stolen.

“During the operation, officers successfully recovered the stolen motorcycle—a red Boxer (registration number KMFQ 735P) which had been hidden in a rental house near Mudete Centre,” the National Police Service (NPS) posted on their X account on Friday.

“The motorcycle was positively identified by its rightful owner. Two suspects were arrested at the scene, and the recovered motorcycle was taken to Kakamega Police Station for further investigation and appropriate action.”

Motorcycle theft

The arrests are part of a wider crackdown on crime in Kakamega and other parts of the country, with a sharp focus on motorcycle theft, one of the most rampant crimes affecting boda boda operators in Kenya.

Criminals often use rental houses or unoccupied structures to conceal stolen motorcycles before selling them or dismantling them for spare parts. This particular tactic was also observed in a 2023 police operation in Kericho County, where six stolen motorcycles were recovered from a similar hideout.

The success of these raids is heavily reliant on community involvement. Police have consistently urged the public to report suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods.

The government is also bolstering such efforts with increased financial support. In the 2025/26 national budget, the National Police Service received a boost of approximately Ksh125.7 billion, up from the previous year. The funds are earmarked for modernising security equipment, improving police welfare, and strengthening training across all departments.
