Migori Senator Eddy Oketch has issued demands to the National Police Service (NPS) over the death of X influencer Albert Ojwang while in police custody.
In a statement on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Oketch said that the death of Ojwang was not only tragic but also intolerable, casting aspersions on police conduct while holding the deceased.
“As the Senator of Migori County, I find the death of Albert Ojwang not only tragic but absolutely intolerable. It is an incident that has shaken the conscience of our people and cast a dark cloud over law enforcement conduct,” Oketch said.
Circumstances surrounding death
The vocal senator has called for an independent probe into the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death after he was picked up by police officers from his home in Kabondo-Kasipul constituency.

“The circumstances surrounding Albert’s death raise deeply disturbing questions that cannot, and will not, be ignored. The police service now bears a heavy burden of accountability,” Oketch noted.
“I am demanding, in the strongest terms possible, a comprehensive, transparent, and evidence-backed explanation from the police—not public relations statements, but factual clarity with urgency.”
Oketch has equally stated that those responsible for the deceased’s death should be held accountable for their actions or inactions during his custody at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.

“How did Albert sustain the fatal head injuries? Who was responsible? What action has been taken? The people of Migori, and indeed the Kenyan public, deserve answers not tomorrow, not later, but now,” he remarked.
Calls for justice
“Let it be clear: unless and until such explanations are provided with seriousness, transparency, and demonstrable evidence, this death shall rightfully be presumed to be a result of police brutality.”
Oketch says that in the case the deceased is found to have been killed while in custody, justice must be served, and the people of Kenya would not allow police brutality to carry on.
“And in that case, there will be no peace. We will not allow the blood of innocent young Kenyans to be swept under the rug of impunity. Justice must be served fully, swiftly, and publicly,” the senator observed.
Police say Ojwang sustained fatal injuries after banging his head against the wall of the Central Police Station walls while in custody.
They also revealed that Ojwang was pronounced dead on arrival after he was rushed to Mbagathi Hospital after sustaining the injuries.
