Gospel artiste and dance choreographer Newton Kamau, alias Bruz Newton, has issued a heartfelt warning to his fans, urging them to be mindful of whom they listen to during moments of accusation and condemnation, as the choice can shape their emotional and spiritual well-being.

In an Instagram post on Thursday, June 5, 2025, the ‘Zigwembe’ crooner stressed that the voices people allow into their minds during such difficult times determine whether they fall into darkness or emerge radiating light.

He urged his followers to reject negativity and instead hold on to faith and positivity.

“SHINE YOUR LIGHT. Who you choose to listen to in the height of accusation and ostracisation, whether true or false, determines whether you’ll be darkness or radiate light from a bad, nasty situation,” Newton wrote on Instagram.

Drawing inspiration from scripture, Bruz Newton referenced John 8:10-12, recounting the story where Jesus confronted the woman accused of adultery and warned all who had been accusing her before giving her the green light to “go and sin no more.”

He reminded his fans that Jesus declared Himself “the light of the world,” promising that those who follow Him will not walk in darkness but have the light of life.

“Consider John 8:10. When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

Bruz Newton encouraged fans to shine their own light even when faced with harsh criticism or ostracisation, emphasising that choosing to listen to the right voices can transform bad, nasty situations into opportunities for growth and hope.

He concluded by appealing to his audience to remain steadfast and to trust that they can overcome challenges by surrounding themselves with love, faith, and positive influence.

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.”

Bruz’s career

Bruz rose to viral fame and established himself as a top-charting singer and dance choreographer in 2020 following the widespread popularity of his song ‘Bazokizo’ and later ‘Zigwembe’, which had crowds captivated during the COVID-19 era.

During that period, he became a household favourite and was frequently invited to perform at various venues across the country, including schools.

At the time, he spoke extensively about his newfound fame and revealed his deep passion for dance, expressing his ambition to create a global reputation.

“Dance music is the way to go now, and my plan is to make the world dance,” he declared.

He also disclosed that he had adopted the nickname Bruz because it was a name given to him by his peers in primary school owing to his small eyes.

“My real name is Newton Kamau. I have small eyes, and when I was young, I was nicknamed Bruze (from Bruce Lee) but with a Z, and it became my name,” he explained.

At the same time, he expressed profound gratitude for how well his music career had blossomed and revealed that the song ‘Bazokizo’ had, in 2020 alone, earned them three awards: Song of the Year, Afro Pop Song of the Year, and Collaboration of the Year.

“Bazokizo gave me my first-ever music award nominations. A lot of people do not know I am the voice in the ‘Bazokizo’ chorus and the last bridge; many assume it is just Collo. We have been nominated in three categories: Song of the Year, Afro Pop Song of the Year, and Collaboration of the Year. I have never been to the Groove Awards,” he disclosed.
