Wetang’ula pledges parliamentary cooperation in meeting with Somaliland president

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula on Friday, May 30, 2025, reaffirmed his commitment to engage in robust parliamentary cooperation with the Republic of Somaliland.

In a statement on Friday, May 30, 2025, following an official meeting with President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro), Spokesperson for the President of the Republic of Somaliland, Hussein Aden Igeh, confirmed the foregoing among a series of agreements reached between the two figures.

Igeh revealed that Wetang’ula extended a warm welcome to President Irro and his delegation, commending Somaliland’s governance model and reaffirming the National Assembly’s willingness to engage in robust parliamentary cooperation.

Additionally, ways of leveraging parliamentary diplomacy to deepen bilateral understanding and enhance cooperation between the two nations were discussed.

Further, the two discussed legislative collaboration to explore mechanisms for sustained parliamentary exchange, institutional capacity building, and structured dialogue between the legislative bodies of the two nations.

The discussion also canvassed matters of democratic governance, where the strengthening of democratic institutions as pillars of good governance was touched on.

The meeting brought together senior members of President Abdirahman Irro’s delegation, Kenyan legislators, and officials from the Somaliland Mission in Nairobi.

Wetang’ula’s meeting with Irro comes after the latter’s meeting with his Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto.

The meeting, convened on Friday, May 30, 2025, in Nairobi, focused on deepening bilateral ties and advancing regional cooperation. During the meeting, both presidents committed to enhancing trade, investment, and economic development between Kenya and Somaliland, with a special focus on improving air connectivity to facilitate trade and travel.

According to Igeh, the two heads of state also reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting peace and security in the Horn of Africa by countering violent extremism.

In addition, the leaders discussed strengthening education and institutional development through academic exchanges, capacity building for public institutions, and expanding vocational training opportunities to empower the youth.

“The two heads of state engaged in a wide-ranging discussion on matters of mutual interest and regional significance, with particular attention to bilateral cooperation–including the promotion of trade, investment, economic development, and enhanced air connectivity,” the statement read in part.

“Peace and Regional Stability–with a shared commitment to countering violent extremism, fostering regional security, and supporting peacebuilding efforts in the Horn of Africa; and Education and Institutional Development– focusing on academic exchange, capacity-building of public institutions, and expanding vocational training opportunities for youth.”
