A vibrant video circulated online, showing James Muiruri who was sad in a tragic event with staff at Igegania Level 4 hospital.
Why didn’t the ambulance driver help Gatundu’s grandfather?
In the video, Muiruri was seen in a violent conflict while carrying his dead granddaughter, blaming hospital staff, including a security guard, for failing to take immediate action to save the child’s life.
The video spread rapidly online and prompted comedian and activist Eric Omondi to intervene. Having touched the incident, Eric phoned Muiruri and then visited Gatundu’s home to give her comfort.
During the visit, Eric also met the baby’s mother, who is the daughter of Muiruri, who explained that the baby was only 11 months old and had been named after her grandfather, which increased the family’s sadness.
Eric, interested in helping, urged Kenyans to contribute whatever they had to help the family in that difficult time, and posted a phone number (0725910162) to anyone who wanted to provide assistance.
A few hours after the request, Eric issued a new statement stating that Kenyans had donated large sums of money.
In the video, Muiruri explained that the baby was not hospitalized because he was not registered at the Community Health Authority (SHA).
“I called someone and he told me to sign up Sha And I also pay fines. I sent KSh 3,600. ”
Muiruri said doctors told him that the process of raising the baby was delayed because health care workers were on strike. He then asked an ambulance to take the baby to another hospital.
“He had had oxygen because he had trouble breathing. But the ambulance driver said he was drinking tea and had not received any instructions to help me.”
Muiruri said he started screaming after seeing the baby’s condition change, and then the baby died.
“We are already at KSh 750k. God bless all those who sent anything. Never miss anything! The system has hurt us. The system hurts us, but good days are coming.”
He continued to urge Kenyans to continue supporting the family financially.
