Why do African immigrants cross over to Europe?

El Hierro, part of the Canary Islands located near the West Coast of Africa, has long been the main route for immigrants trying to reach European land.

Many cross the Atlantic by crafty for temporary boats and rubber boats, which do not have enough equipment for those trips. For many years, thousands have died trying to get to a safe place.

According to The Independent, about 47,000 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands in 2024, a number that broke the record for the second year in a row.

Most of them were Mali, Senegal, and Morocco, with many from Mauritania. Among the arrivals were thousands of young children not marching.

By mid -May 2025, approximately 10,800 people had arrived in the Canary Islands via the Atlantic.

Although this signifies a 34% decrease compared to the same period last year, the risks of travel and humanitarian disasters that often accompany it are still true.
