Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has issued a fervent call for the Ministry of Interior to provide an update on the nation’s security status, following the recent murder of Father Alois Cheruiyot Bett in Elgeyo Markwet.
Speaking during a parliamentary session on Thursday, May 29, 2025, Sifuna highlighted the distressing pattern of unresolved violent crimes, noting that, unlike the late Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were’s murder case, where arrests were promptly made, no suspects have been apprehended in Father Bett’s case.
He emphasised that the public is increasingly attentive to how security forces handle individual cases, noting that investigations often appear to accelerate when high-profile individuals are involved.
“I want to comment on the murder of Father Alois Cheruiyot Bett. We as a house buried one of us who was shot in similar circumstances. Therefore, for the senator of Nandi to ask that the ministry now needs to give us an update on the security situation in this country,” Sifuna stated.

“The most distressing thing is that no people have been arrested. At least in the murder of the former member of Kasipul, we saw an arrest. The public is very keen to see how the security forces deal with individual cases; it sometimes appears that when it is a ‘big person’, these investigations are sped up and you can see action being taken very fast.”
Sifuna, who serves on the Senate Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights, assured that the committee is committed to conducting thorough investigations into such incidents.
He stressed the importance of delivering justice not only to the bereaved families but also to restore public confidence in the nation’s security apparatus.
“I want to join Senator for Nandi, and because I am in that committee, I want to assure you that we will do our very best to bring answers not just to the family but also to the church so that we can be able to put a stop,” he added.
Cherargei on Father Bett’s murder
Sifuna’s sentiments echo Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei‘s call for swift justice for the slain priest.
Speaking during a parliamentary session on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Cherargei emphasised the necessity of accountability, stating that those responsible for the heinous act should be apprehended and brought to justice.

The vocal senator also expressed his hope for the restoration of peace in Kerio Valley.
“We shall not rest until the killers of Fr Allois Cheruiyot Bett, parish priest of St Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, Elgeyo Marakwet County, are apprehended and taken to court; that is when justice shall be done,” Cherargei stated.
“I want to assure the people of Nandi and the family that I will not sit until justice is done, and I hope peace will return in Kerio Valley.”
