Delap’s linked move to the Blue is good news for Manchester City, who included a sell-on clause when they sold Delap to Ipswich a year ago.

The initial deal was worth £15 million, with an additional £5 million contingent on Ipswich’s promotion to the Premier League, which they achieved.

City also included a 20% sell-on fee on any profit Ipswich made from a future transfer. Delap’s £30 million move to Chelsea will therefore net City £2 million.

The Citizens had a buy-back option, their recent acquisition of Omar Marmoush and Erling Haaland’s contract extension mean a striker is not a priority this summer.

Delap made only six first-team appearances for City and spent time on loan at Stoke City, Preston North End, and Hull City (not Hill City as previously reported), scoring a combined 12 goals across those spells – the same number he netted for Ipswich this season.
