The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an advisory outlining the country’s current and expected weather conditions as the long rains season draws to a close in most regions, highlighting areas likely to receive rainfall over the next five days, from Thursday, May 29, to Monday, June 2, 2025.

According to the latest weather forecast issued on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, rainfall will persist in parts of the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Coast, Western, and Northwestern Kenya.

The weatherman noted that the rainfall is likely to be accompanied by isolated storms in some areas and may vary in intensity from light showers to heavy downpours.

“Rainfall is expected to continue over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central Rift
Valley and the Coast,” Kenya Met’s latest advisory reads.

The regions set to receive the continuation of rain include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot counties.

Other counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka, while the coastal region includes Mombasa, Lamu, Tana River and Taita Taveta.

Strong winds

The weatherman also issued a warning about strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s) expected over the coast, including Kenya’s territorial waters, as well as the south-eastern lowlands and northeastern and northwestern Kenya.

“Strong southerly to south-easterly winds with speeds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s) are expected over the coast (and Kenya’s territorial waters), the south-eastern lowlands, North-eastern and North-western Kenya,” the Kenya Met stated.

Long rains

The weatherman had earlier stated that May marks the end of the March-to-May long rains period in much of the country, excluding coastal and western areas where rainfall can persist into June.

In a detailed climate statement released on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the Met department reported that moderate to heavy rainfall had drenched several parts of the country over recent days, particularly in Nairobi, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and coastal regions, and is expected to decrease, though intermittent showers will persist in a few areas.

“Rainfall currently being experienced is expected to gradually reduce… However, a few areas over the Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, isolated areas over the Southeastern lowlands, especially those neighbouring Nairobi County, and the Coastal region are likely to continue receiving rainfall with some breaks for the remaining part of May,” the department said.
