Two people in possession of 250 Kilograms of bhang worth Ksh7.5 million have been arrested by police in Machakos County.

According to Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the duo concealed the bhang in a 10 gunny bags.

The two identified as Samuel Baraza, and Lawrence Onyango Asindi had boarded a Toyota Noah when they were intercepted by anti-narcotics officers who were working on a tip-off at Kitanga village.

They had narrowly escaped a police roadblock earlier that day at the Lari flyover in Kiambu County.

Acting on a tip-off, the Anti-Narcotics Unit laid a trap, expecting to intercept a major haul of narcotics.

DCI said no weapons were found, but the real contraband was uncovered inside the van where ten tightly-packed gunny bags sat.

“On searching the black Toyota Noah registration number KDN 218A in which they were driving, the bhang estimated at Ksh7.5 million in street value was found,” part of the statement by DCI reads.

Police said the seizure has been detained at DCI Headquarters awaiting further processing even as the suspects await arraignment.

Separate incident

The incident comes days after four people were arrested following an operation that was carried out by a multi-agency security team that uncovered a drug-trafficking syndicate along the Moyale-Isiolo highway.

According to a statement on the night of Friday, April 11, 2025, DCI said the sting operation saw a long-distance truck flagged down, and upon search, a significant haul of cannabis sativa was recovered.

According to police, the truck, a Mercedes-Benz Actros, that was being driven by 33-year-old Boniface Nthenge Kithuku, was ferrying gunny bags stuffed with tightly packed bales of cannabis, each bundle wrapped in yellowish cellophane and cunningly stashed within the truck’s chassis.

“A multi-agency team has intercepted a long-haul truck and recovered a significant haul of cannabis sativa, netting four traffickers. The operation, which played out on the busy Moyale-Isiolo highway, saw officers flag down a Mercedes-Benz Actros driven by 33-year-old Boniface Nthenge Kithuku. A search of the truck revealed gunny bags stuffed with tightly packed bales of cannabis, each bundle wrapped in yellowish cellophane and cunningly stashed within the truck’s chassis. The concealment technique suggested a well-coordinated drug trafficking attempt,” DCI stated.
