Just two days after hosting his sold-out one-man comedy show dubbed What It Takes at the Tsavo Ballroom on May 24, 2025, YY Comedian has come out to name the people who inspired and challenged him to step out of his comfort zone.

Taking to social media on Monday, May 26, 2025, the comedian shared that the journey to putting up the show was sparked by actress Minnie Kariuki and media personality Nick Kwach.

Minnie, who played Shakila in the popular comedy series Disco Matanga alongside Awinja and Kwach, challenged YY during a night out in Madungu after they had wrapped up a shoot for the show.

YY revealed that before that conversation, he had never seriously considered doing a solo comedy performance.

He admitted to having fears and doubts about the idea. However, Minnie and Kwach reminded him of the potential he was sitting on and pushed him to think beyond what he had already achieved in the comedy scene.

That moment, according to the comedian, marked a turning point.

He took the challenge head-on, began planning, picked a date, and set things in motion.

”Without these two, even the thought would not have been there…. That night, in Mudungu, after shooting Disco Matanga, we talked deep into the AM, not about what I had done but about what I was afraid to do. You two challenged my doubts, stripped my excuses, and reminded me who the hell I am. And maze because of you, I set the date. Because of you, I bet on myself. Because of you, I sold out a theatre,” YY said.

The result was a sold-out event packed with fans who showed up to watch him command the stage alone, delivering his unique brand of humour to a fully packed theatre.

Similar advances from King Kaka

YY also acknowledged that rapper King Kaka had for so approached him many times with the same idea.

The artiste had been nudging him to organise a one-man show, but YY confessed to always finding a way to dodge the suggestion and even avoided engaging King Kaka about the matter.

Maze, you dared me to chase it with harsh truth after ignoring King Kaka for so long. Kaka alinibeg ‘One man ni lini‘?” he added

In the end, he says it was the unexpected encouragement from Minnie Kariuki and Nick Kwach that gave him the final push to commit to and execute the idea.

He expressed deep appreciation for the duo, calling them the driving force behind what turned out to be a successful milestone in his comedy career.

“Thank you for holding me accountable to the version of me that already existed, and I was sleeping on…. All this is courtesy of @awishproductions’ series DISCO MATANGA… I now agree we are always at the right place at the right time if we are keen.” He concluded.
