Mbale High students go on rampage  – Kenya News Agency

Students of Friends School Mbale High School went on the rampage Sunday night causing untold damage to the school property.

The students set ablaze the second floor of a two-storey main dormitory, burning beddings and other materials and reduced the metallic beds to shells.

Addressing journalists after an emergency meeting, the Acting Vihiga County Commissioner (CC) Florence Sitawa said several students were injured during the stampede and were taken to hospital, attended to and discharged.

Sitawa said the school, which has a population of 1,422, has been closed indefinitely and the Board of Governors (BoG) will convene on Monday next week to deliberate on the way forward.

The rioting students also broke into the food store and poured the cereals on the floors, they vandalized the school stationery store, they smashed the window panes of a three-storey building and broke down the main gate.

The area Member of Parliament (MP) Clement Sloya decried the incident and called for thorough investigation into the matter.

The MP, who is also an old student of the institution said it is doubly painful that the destruction has happened during an economically difficult period.

He stated that all the stakeholders will be brought on board to find a way of assisting the school to be back on its feet.
