Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has on Monday, May 26, 2025, visited Karen Hospital, where Juja MP George Koimburi is currently admitted in critical condition.

This comes just hours after the MP was found abandoned on a coffee farm, unconscious and with visible signs of torture, following a broad daylight abduction shortly after leaving church in Juja.

Speaking after the hospital visit, Gachagua expressed deep concern and disappointment with the current administration, accusing it of using force and intimidation to silence critics and perceived opponents.

He revealed that Koimburi is in a critical state, unable to speak, and is only communicating by writing.

According to Gachagua, doctors informed him that the MP has sustained severe soft tissue injuries consistent with professional torture techniques.

The injuries, doctors reportedly explained, are not typical of ordinary assault but appear to be inflicted by individuals with training in advanced torture methods.

Gachagua further stated that, in addition to the injuries, Koimburi’s vocal cords have been severely affected and that the MP is not able to speak.

“The doctors have confirmed that he was tortured by professionals. He has serious soft tissue injuries—this is torture normally inflicted by professionals. He has lost his voice, and the doctors are working around the clock to restore his vocal cords. He has been able to communicate through writing because he is not able to speak,” Gachagua says.

Suspected poisoning

Doctors suspect that harmful chemicals may have been administered through inhalation, leading to the loss of his voice.

Medical personnel are reportedly working around the clock to restore his speech.

“Some chemicals must have been administered through inhalation, and the doctors have confirmed that preliminary investigations have shown the chemicals interfered with his vocal cords. The doctors have assured us that they are doing everything to make sure he is out of danger. His blood and urine samples have been taken to different private laboratories to establish what could have happened,” Gachagua added.

Two men, disguised as worshippers, forcibly took him into a Subaru Forester with an altered number plate.

His wife, Ann, sustained injuries while trying to intervene. Koimburi was found unconscious the next morning in a coffee plantation in Githunguri, showing signs of assault, and was rushed to Plainsview Hospital for stabilisation before being taken to Karen Hospital.
